The X-Files Dana Scully helped more women go into STEM

The X-Files Dana Scully helped more women go into STEMThe X-Files Dana Scully helped more women go into STEMIf you are a woman whose formative years took place between 1993 and 2002 and you now work in the STEM, there is a good chance you probably were a fan of The X-Files. The concept of Gillian Andersons Dana Scully as a no-nonsense, strong and kickass medical doctor, forensic pathologist and FBI agent inspiring a generation of young women to pursue careers in science has always been rumored, but there was never any concrete data to back it up.until now. Thanks to new research from theGeena Davis Institute on Gender in Media of 2,021 online participants (ages 25 and older), The Scully Effect has now been proven to be real. According to the survey, women who watchedThe X-Filesregularly were 50% more likely to work in STEM, over 60% of those work in STEM said Scully served as a role model, and amongst women who are familiar with Scullys character, 63% say Scully increased their confid ence that they could excel in a male-dominated profession. The authors of the study wrote, It is easy to dismiss entertainment media as simply entertaining, but half a century of social science research reveals that the characters, images, and storylines in media shape ur everyday lives in profound ways.12 They provide subtle and not-so-subtle cues about what we should prioritize in our lives, how we should spend our time, how we should spend our income, who we should love, how we should love, how to overcome hardships, etc. In the case of the Scully Effect, entertainment media influences what career options girls and women can envision for themselves. In Gillian Andersons own words, Scullys character manifested a woman not yet depicted on TV, and as the fan response soon proved, a desperately needed role model for women of all ages, everywhere.Abby Norman summed up the appeal of the character last year for Paste Magazine. For me- and Im sure many other young women who grew up watch ing it- Dana Scully was one of the first times I truly identified with a fictional character. I needed someone to give me permission to question what Id been told was the truth. I was desperately seeking strong female role models who had depth and definition beyond the normal tropes- none of which interested me, even as a preteen. As a venerable dweeb, I also was greatly in need of someone to tell me that being smart was an asset rather than an affliction, she wrote. This study is encouraging as more men continue to major in STEM fields in college. In 2013, even though women earn the majority of all bachelors degrees, they earned only 18 percent of all degrees in computer sciences, 19 percent in engineering, and 43 percent in mathematics. This gap then feeds into the workforce pipeline with women hold only 24% of jobs in STEM and only 10% of graduate degrees earned by women are in STEM fields, compared to 24% of graduate degrees earned by men.

Get the Inside Scoop on How Job Interviews Work

Get the Inside Scoop on How Job Interviews WorkGet the Inside Scoop on How Job Interviews WorkMaybe its been a while since your lastjob einstellungsgesprch? or maybe youre about to embark on your veryfirst real interview after graduation. Whatever the case, its normal to have a moment of panic after making arrangements to meet the hiring manager. Do you even know what this meeting iswhen it comes right down to it? Whats the typical format of a job interview? At its simplest, a job interview is a aussicht to learn more about the job while showcasing yourskills and experience. Your goal is to find out if the job is right for you, which means learning as much as possible about the duties, expectations, opportunities, team, and culture. You also want to show the hiring manager that youre the perfect person to solve the employers problems and skyrocket the company to even greater heights of success. All Job Interviews Are Not Created Equal If youve watched any workplace sitcoms, you p robably have one very specific image of what a job interview looks like. You expect a long table in a conference room, with you on one side of it, dressed in yourbest business apparel, and the boss on the other side of it, dressed in his or her much fancier workwear. But job interviews dont all look alike. For instance, your interview might Take place in the managers office, a conference room, an open space at the company, a restaurant, or acoffee shop.Involve just one person a representative from Human Resources (HR), for example, or your potential new boss or a panel of people. You might meet with prospective colleagues, people from other departments, the owner of the company, the Vice President of sales, just about anyone who works at the company.Last 15 minutes (generally not a terrific sign, but potentially OK, if its anearly screening) or several hours. You could even spend a whole day participating in several rounds of interviews. Be an exclusive affair, where youre the onl y candidate interviewing, or agroup interviewinvolving several other candidates. Find Out How it Will Work Before You Go The many possible variations are one reason why you want to communicate clearly with the hiring manager, recruiter, or HR representative before you arrive for your meeting. Dont be afraid to ask questions to get a sense of what youre going into. For example, you might ask Whom will I be meeting, and what is this persons role?Whatmaterials should I bring with me? (Regardless of what the hiring manager says, bring several copies of your resume and any other materials you might need to show your work, such as a portfolio.)What is thedress code? (If theres no dress code, tidybusiness casualis the best choice. Your interviewer might be wearing jeans, but you shouldnt be.) What the Interview Format Might Look Like Assuming that you have answers to all your questions (and that youre the only candidate interviewing that day, and will be meeting with just one perso n) the job interview formatwill probably look something like this Youll arrive at the office, at least 15 minutes early, having confirmed the address, including the floor and suite, ahead of time and mapped out your route to avoid traffic surprises.A receptionist or administrator will announce you.Youll be ushered into an office or conference room, whereupon youll meet the hiring manager or HR representative, and begin your conversation.Let the hiring manager set the tone but be on the lookout for an opportunity to ask your questions and make a case for yourself. The hiring manager might help with this, for instance by leading with an invitation to tell him or her about yourself. Come prepared with anelevator pitch, in which you explain who you are and what you do. Agood pitchlasts 60 seconds or less, andsells you as a candidate to the HR person. At the end of the interview, youll have the opportunity toask the interviewer questionsof your own. Be ready with a few questions about th e job and the company, and anything else you need to know to make a decision if you were to be offered the job. After the interview, follow-up with athank-note email or noteto everyone you interviewed with. Be Prepared to Be Flexible Understand that no matter howthoroughly you prepare, and how much information you get from the HR person on the phone, youre probably going to have to roll with some punches the day of the interview. Maybe the representative said that youd be meeting with one person, and youre actually landseeing three people. Maybe youll have to move to a different floor or another location or change your approach when it becomes clear that the hiring manager isnt buying what youre selling. Just remember that a job interview is, at its heart, a meeting between two or more people who might work together someday. You all have the same goal in mind to see if you can have a happy and productive working relationship.

Job Interview Question And Answer If You Were A Piece Of Fruit What Would You Be

Job Interview Question And Answer If You Were A Piece Of Fruit What Would You Be Job Interview Question And Answer If You Were A Piece Of Fruit What Would You Be?Posted October 13, 2011, by Louisa Veidelis Although it sounds like something from a cheesy dating program, this interview question is actually an invitation for you to showcase your skills and qualities. Questions like this are designed for employers to get an insight into how well you can think on your feet, and how you react in a high-pressure situation. Think of this kind of question as an opportunity to talk about any aspect of your personality that you think the employer would be impressed with. Think of your strengths, and match them with the characteristics required for the job or industry. Then think of a fruit (or colour, or animal) which could embody these qualities. Your explanation is more important than the fruit you pick, as it brings your response back to what you have to offer the company. Here are some exa mples that you can use as inspiration for your response I would be an apple. Apples can be juiced, baked, eaten on their own or in afruit salad. Similarly, I am versatile and can perform well in different situations, on my own or in a team. And if an apple a day keeps the doctor away, I am just as reliable and will be a healthy asset to your organisation. I would be a passionfruit. This is a hardy fruit that grows well in higher altitudes. Similarly, I thrive under pressure, can take criticism and am also very passionate about what I do. I would be a banana. I have a soft centre and excellent people skills, but I also have a thick skin and am not put off by setbacks. I grow and develop all year round. Heres how you can make better use of your time

Heres how you can make better use of your timeHeres how you can make better use of your timeHow can I make better use of my time? There are only two ways to make better use of your time.To create and follow a clear plan of action for each dayTo increase your energy levels so that you can accomplish in an hour what used to take you a day. Here are a few quick and easy tips for accomplishing both.1. Use the Ivy Lee Method to plan your nightWay back when (in the early 1920s) a productivity consultant named Ivy Lee welches invited by Mr. Charles Schwab (the richest man in the world at that time) to consult his executives and help them improve their time management.Ivy told Charles to only pay him What he thought his advice was worth and then sat down with each of the executives. He told them to do only one thing.Every night, they were to make a list of the SIX (no more, no less) biggest priorities for the next day and then clearly schedule them out on a sheet of paper. That was it.But guess what?3 months later, Mr. Lee received a check from Charles for the equivalent of $400,000It was that effective. If you want to make better use of your time, then you need to limit and clearly schedule your biggest priorities for every day.Write out the 6 biggest things that you need to accomplish and schedule them each day. I promise, it will revolutionize your time management.2. Create locational anchorsYour brain works through the power of association. If you habitually do a certain task in a certain place then your brain will begin to associate the physical and psychological states youre in with that specific location. For example, when you lay in bed, you typically feel tired even if youve only been awake for a few hours. When you go to a gym, you immediately get a burst of energy even if you were tired before.Use this to your advantage and create specific location based anchors for important tasks.Set up your office in the same way every day. Have a Pre game ritual to help you get into a productive state. If you have multiple different tasks to accomplish, assign a different location for each one.For example, I do my writing at a specific coffee shop, my podcasting from my studio, and my marketing and funnel optimization from my home office.Test it out and I promise youll find yourself being far more productive throughout the day.3. Get at least 8 hours of sleep each nightYou cannot sustain high levels of productivity when youre sleep deprived. When I started sleeping in and getting at least 89 hours of sleep a night, my time management and productivity transformed over night. This might sound simple, but I promise it will work.4. Use a Pomodoro TimerEvery time you sit down to work, write down the ONE task you are commited to accomplishing in the next 50 minutes. Then, set a timer for 50 minutes and work with a single minded focus on that task. When the timer goes off, get up, stretch, and take a 10 minute break.Come back to your desk and repeat this tactic until the day is over. When I began implementing this strategy, my productivity doubled over night.5. Outsource low-level tasksI have a personal shopper, a chef, and a housekeeper.Even though these services cost me an arm and a leg on the front end, the amount of time and money that theyve saved me is incalculable.Think about it this way.If your time is worth, say $100/hour and you can pay someone to clean your house for only $20, is it worth it for you to spend your time cleaning your house?ABSOLUTELY NOTYou havent saved $20, youve lost $80.Identify low level tasks that are currently eating away at your time and pay someone else to do them immediately.I know youll be scared to do this (so was I), but if you use your new found time effectively, their services will pay for them self in less than a week.6. Do your fruchtwein important tasks during peak mental energy hoursDespite what people believe, time isnt our most valuable resource.Energy is.Think about it.You have 24 hours in a day.But how many of those hours are you physically capable of sustaining productivity?Unless youre an animal like Gary Vee, the answer is typically around 6 (according to science). And a significant body of research has concluded that most peoples mental energy levels peak around 23 hours after they wake up.Therefore, you should schedule ALL of your most difficult tasks during hours 36 of your day.By focusing on the most important things when youre energy is at its highest, youll be able to get more done more quickly and make far better use of your time.7. Say no moreThe most effective way to get more done is, quite simply, to commit to fewer things. The 1 reason that people are stressed out is because they try and do too much.Learn to prioritize yourself and say No to the bad and even the good so that you have time for the great.Hope this helps.Stay grounded,Andrew

7 Keys to Radio Advertising Success

7 Keys to Radio Advertising Success7 Keys to Radio Advertising SuccessRadio advertising two words that are barely spoken about anymore. At the 2016 Advertising Week event, there was no time at all devoted to radio ads because they are considered yesterday. Theyre not hip, and to be fair, have always been thought of like the red-headed stepchild of the industry. There are still effective ways to reach a large number of people. While millennials may be dumping radio, there are millions of consumers who find this free resource invaluable. And even then, there are ways to get into ad-supported free versions of the latest apps like Spotify and Pandora. Whats more, radio gives you the chance to get very creative on a small budget, as you a relying on the customers imagination to create the visuals. Want someone on the top of a mountain, on Mars, surrounded by killer sheep and an army of alien clowns? No problem. So, if youre ready to dive in, here are seven ways you can grab success throug h the radio. Know Your Target Audience Just like with every ad you create, you must know yourtarget audience. Advertising your western gear store on a country station makes a lot of sense. Advertising a teen clothing store on the same station doesnt. Make a list of the radio stations in your market. Listen to each one to help identify your target audience. What kind of listeners will be tuning in, and are they a potential customer for your product or service? Radio stations also offer programs youll want to know more about before you buy. You wont want to advertise your religious bookstore during a program that has a raunchy sense of humor. Be appropriate. Request a High Frequency of Ads A radio commercial needs to air multiple times before it sinks in with the listener. Running your commercial once a week for a month isnt going to be enough. Frequency refers to how many times your ad airs in a short amount of time. A commercial that airs multiple times in a day has a better chance of reaching the listener than a commercial that only airs a few times in a week. However, if you are going to create an ad that runs many times a day, be wary of the nag factor. If its too annoying, you will alienate potential customers. Write a Great Script Without a truly great script, everything else on this list is just window dressing. You can have the best production, talent, time-slot, and have your target audience nailed, but a poor script will make it all worthless. So, the pressure is really on to make that script shine. Ideally, youll want to hire a professional copywriter or creative advertising agency to do this for you. However, money can be tight when youre running a small business, and you may have to settle for your writing skills to make this work. First, listen to a lot of radio. You need to pay attention to what catches your ear, and what passes you by. Which ads speak to you? Which ones are memorable, hours, or even days later? Which ads are OK on th e first listen, but incredibly annoying after a few more plays? Then, dig into the archives of radio advertisements by doing an internet search. Most important, remember that you can paint any picture you want in the minds of the listeners. You dont have to rely on special visual effects this can all be done with voice talent and some sound effects. And the results can be incredible. Take Casting Very Seriously So, you have a great script. Now you need to bring it to life. And the first step in that process is to hire the perfect voice talent for the job. You may be tempted to do it yourself (which rarely works, unless its ideally suited to the product or service, think Dave from Wendys). Dont do it. You dont have the required skills, timing, or vocal presence to pull this off. You can find voice talent in every city in America. And because of the Internet, you dont even have to stay local. You can find great talent in a city thousands of miles away, and get them to record the a udio and send it to you via an FTP or cloud-based storage service. Ideally, youll want to be there when they are recording the audio though. You want to give them some direction before and after each take, to ensure you are getting just what you want. Dont be afraid to redirect the talent, or ask for different approaches. Voice actors are consummate professionals and want to give you just what you pay for. Good Production Is Essential Unlike television commercials, production is more simple for a radio commercial. You need a good, imaginative script, voice talent, music, and sound effects. However, that doesnt mean you should slap something together. Your copy isnt relying on any visuals, so its vital you capture the listeners attention from the start. The copy needs to be crystal clear and not muddied by trying to be too cutesy in your pitch. Find The Most Affordable Rates Take advantage of the low ad rates for radio. Ad rates are always on the rise, but the costs are still more affordable than visual mediums like television. Use your negotiating skills to get a good deal on an ad bundle. The more ads you buy, the better rates youll be able to get. Get Your zeiteinteilung Right Ad rates are generally less expensive in the first and third quarters. Radio commercials in these time frames are easier to negotiate and cheaper for you to advertise. Whats more, the seasonality of the ad buy can influence your creative approach, making the selling message even more powerful. For instance, in the first quarter, customers are recovering from a heavy spend/shop cycle during November and Decembers big holidays. Is this a good time to talk about savings that can be had? Or, better yet, is this a good time to talk about ways to make extra money? Before you take the plunge into radio advertising, find out if youreReady for Radio. And if youre ready to hit the airwaves, this radio commercial scriptcan show you how to deliver strong copy that will reach your listen ers every time.
