How to Expand Your Job Search Nationwide -Guest Post By Heather EagerAre you looking for a job but just arent having too much luck getting what you want in the area that youre living in? You may want to consider expanding your job search beyond your city.Of course, before doing so, youd have to determine that moving is something that both you and your family could handle. But if you think a move could increase your chances of being hired in your field then its a good idea to go ahead and expand your search. Here are some ways to get this doneConduct Industry ResearchWhen youre first looking to expand your job search, its a good idea to look at areas that appear to be showing growth for you field. If youre working in an industrial field, you may not want to focus your attention on an artsy city. So before getting departureed, its good to determine where you see growth and where you dont so you dont waste valuable time and resources on places that wont help you get the job you want.Use National Job BoardsThere are plenty of great sites out there that allow you to search for jobs both in your area or other areas around the country. Whether youre posting your resume to Monster, Career Builder or even Craigslist, there are plenty of opportunities to have your resume seen by a wide audience.Join Social NetworksExperts cannot stress enough how important it is to utilize social networks like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn when conducting a job search that expands nationwide. You can join networks for various cities youd like to consider for jobs, join company networks or just interact with former coworkers who may be able to give you leads in new areas. The point is that social networking is a great way to get your name in front of the eyes of recruiters from around the country. So if youre looking to expand your search, joining a social network is a great route to take.Call CompaniesAnother route to consider is calling a company directly that youre interested in workin g for and seeing if their human resources department knows of any positions opening up, no matter where they are in the country. You may also be able to find this information on the companys website, but by calling the company directly, you may be able to get your hands on a multitude of information that you could not otherwise find on the website.Keep an Open MindWhile youre thinking about expanding your job search beyond the city youre in, you probably have an idea of a few places that you dont want to work. However, if youre really looking for work then its a good idea to open your mind to any possibilities available. In this challenging economy where nearly 10 percent of the population is still unemployed, its important to widen your perspective when conducting a job search. So if you have already considered expanding to a nationwide job search, good for you. And if you havent, its time to start considering that possibility.Need a job? I Need to Take Time Off Immediately At A New Job  How Women Weigh In

I Need to Take Time Off Immediately At A New Job How Women Weigh In Asking for time off at the beginning of a new job can be intimidating, scary, and frowned up, depending on the circumstances. You are still unsure of your place within the company, youre trying to make a good impression, and you arent yet familiar with your boss and how she/he reacts to certain situations. While asking for time off to take a vacation can be risky, asking for necessary time off when a close relative is ill should be understandable to your boss and your company. One anonymous FGBer wrote into our Discussion Board to ask for advice on this sensitive subject. Its my first week at a new job. I need to take a few weeks off... immediately, she said. My mom is terminally ill. I have a flight ready to go see my mom in Florida, but I havent told my boss. This will be the last time I see my mom before she passes away, but I just started a new job that I cant afford to lose. What do I tell my boss?? I get too emoti onal thinking about it and end up wanting to cry every time I think to say something to him.Another FGBer offered her support, as well as very sound advice. Its a conversation youre going to have to have, right? So, if it were me, I would probably say something like, I know the zeiteinteilung of this is unfortunate, and Id like to make sure you understand that I am fully committed to this job. However, I have a family emergency, my mother has entered hospice care (or however you can say it), and I need a few personal days. Depending on what you do, you could offer to be available for questions/etc. via schmelzglas or text, if you feel up to it. Letting your boss know that you realize the timing is not great will help them feel better about trusting you. I hope this helps. Big hug.First, from everyone at Fairygodboss, we are so sorry to hear what you are going through.Being honest with your boss is key. Ask her/him to meet with you privately toward the end of the day if you are worrie d about getting emotional (and if you do get emotional, that is perfectly acceptable you are going through a very hard time, and your boss will understand). Be straightforward and stress to your boss how much this job means to you. Say that you are willing to take unpaid leave (if that is standard protocol). And dont forget to remind yourself that this could not have been predicted, and it is not your fault. Career site AskAManager.org says that in the case of a close relatives illness, the normal rules dont apply. If a very close relative parent, sibling, spouse, or child is seriously ill and you need to go be with them, reasonable managers will understand, the site continues.Monster gives similar advice, also adding to ask your supervisor if there is anything you can accomplish remotely while you are gone.Even though they may not have anything for you to do, or it isnt feasible, at least the question was asked, the site states.Again, these are extenuating circumstances. If you mus t ask for time off for a vacation at the beginning of a new job, ideally you would have mentioned said trip when the company made you an offer (bringing it up during the interview would be a little premature). However, if you did not mention the vacation prior to accepting the position, do so as soon as possible. AskAManager.org recommends sending an email to your supervisor -- something along the lines of I realized that in my excitement about the job, I overlooked the fact that I have an out-of-state trip scheduled for (dates). I apologize for not getting this on your radar earlier Will being away those dates cause any issues? (I assume I may need to take the time unpaid, which Im of course willing to do.) Thank you, and Im looking forward to starting work on the 12th

An Inside Look At How This Washington Post Director Builds His Teams

An Inside Look At How This Washington deutsche bundespost Director Builds His Teams Jarrod Dicker is the Director of Ad Product and Engineering at The Washington Post. Dicker has been a leader in technology, product and advertising at the Huffington Post, Time Inc. and fruchtwein recently RebelMouse. He spoke to PowerToFly about his new role, The Washington Posts recent traffic milestones and why he believes that hiring and managing remote gruppes is a great way to scale yur business in this global economy.Tell us about your new role at The Washington Post.I joined The Washington Post to lead ad product and engineering in September of this year. Its been a couple months, but weve already made major strides creating new core product offerings for our clients. It is a newly created role, focused on innovating our ad products across all platforms and devices. As a major media and technology company, ad tech is also at the forefront of our development. The Posts core engineering team is incredible, and we want to leverage whats being done across the entire organization for the benefit of our advertisers. This space is wide open, and we have the talent and resources to pave the way for the next frontier of advertising, whetherbei its video, native, VR, or display and beyond. The team were building out allows for experimentation and innovation. We can fail, we can learn, and by doing that be responsible for the next big things in the technology space. Before The Washington Post, you ran a fully distributed team at RebelMouse. Tell us how you set that up and how that worked. What was your role there?I led commercial product and operations at RebelMouse. My team was responsible for the client builds, support and integrations on the platform. I was lucky to work twice with Paul Berry, most recently at RebelMouse and also the Huffington Post, where he was at the forefront of the distributed team mentality. I learned and appreciated the benefits of remote working at both c ompanies. At RebelMouse, my team spanned the globe from Buenos Aires, Mumbai, and Bangladesh to Ukraine, Serbia, and Chile. And the perspectives on development, life and balance I gained wouldnt have been possible without collaborating with brilliant minds across the world. You also open up your talent pool, and shed any restrictions. If the mentality is someone must be here, then youre limiting yourself to the talent available out there. Of course, for some positions its important to have the person in office, but for others its actually more beneficial to build remotely. At RebelMouse, we structured mainly around the latter on the design and development side. Can you share your top 5 best practices for managing a distributed team based on your experiences at RM? Collaboration over Dictation Work together. Amazing ideas come from everywhere and thats how successful products come to fruition. Dont spend time dictating tasks you think are right, spend time discussing ideas and coming up with a solution together. Communicate Openly Give credit where credit is due, and dont be afraid to give feedback. Also, talk about how long things will take, best practices, and other efficiency measurements. Keep it Familiar Try hard to include remote teams in office culture, whether its a Slack group sharing GIFs or connecting through social networks. No one wants to or should feel like an outsider. Learn Together Making mistakes is the greatest thing for product innovation and development. We learn from those mistakes and build a stronger, more sustainable solution because of it. Welcome experimentation, making mistakes, and learn together as a group. Embrace Technology There are so many tools (Slack, Skype, Gchat) that allow us to communicate remotely. Its affordable and very effective. What are some of your best practices for on-boarding and training remote workers?First, I love to introduce the new hire to the entire team. Its hard for anyone to work at a company if they fe el like an outsider. So, its important to acclimate everyone immediately and make it a comfortable and fun working environment. And from there, the training begins. I think its best for the team to train one another so they learn from each other and know who to contact when they have questions. Rather than training from your boss or a direct report, theres a lot of lateral learning, training and co-development that helps build community and team unity. The Washington Post is a huge organization which has recently hit some incredible traffic milestones. How does a remote team help scale a large scale business like this? The Washington Post has become the new paper of record. This comes as a result of hard work across the board, from editorial to tech to advertising. On the ad product side, were looking to bring in the best product and development minds to help push our product forward and build the most optimal experiences for our clients??that means not limiting ourselves to people wh o can be in the office in DC, NYC, California, etc. And it involves knowing how to build and create for the industry at large, not just our site and apps. As a major media and technology company, we want to set the stage for engineering and development while identifying how we can offer software as a service. What advice would you give other hiring managers who want to grow their departments by hiring remotely?Embrace it. Technology allows us to communicate in so many different ways and work with brilliant minds across the globe. The idea of having to be in the office for development is no longer mandatory, its a choice. People will be the most effective in the environment they feel most comfortable with. For some, thats being remote. Hiring managers shouldnt limit their talent pool because some employees are more comfortable working a certain way.Do you have advice for writing a job description that attracts good remote workers?Yes, you need to be open to flexible work hours and you should show that in your job description. The best part about remote working is being able to work on your time. I think a lot of hesitancy for some companies to opt into remote is the idea that they have to work the same hours everyone else is working and be here. When actually, people will be exponentially more productive if they work the hours that align best with their lifestyle. Weve been told that 95 is the norm, but that limits the creative mindset of others that may work better at night or early morning. Remote working is open to this, and with this mindset you will see a tremendous growth in productivity and creativity on your teams. Why do you believe in hiring remote workers? Why does it make good business sense for you at a business like the The Washington Post?In a constantly evolving media space, embracing new ideas is mandatory in order to stay ahead of the curve. Having employees from all over the world, or those who choose to work remote, enables different perspecti ves and ideas that can be the catalyst to take a company to the next level. Companies shouldnt limit themselves. Process and ideas evolve, and to be ahead in this space companies must evolve with them. The Washington Post is in DC and you are based in New York City. How do you divide your time?I travel to DC to collaborate and meet with the team there. I enjoy working across the organization and that means spending time with a lot of different departments. I aim to go to DC weekly but sometimes Ill stay in NYC for two weeks or more. The Washington Post culture is familiar with remote working, and has the right mentality and technology set up to support this way of work. Can you point to a specific project that the PowerToFly hires on your team helped to execute? Either at RM or WP?We recently hired Virginia Ortiz to help build out our WP BrandStudio native campaigns. She is an amazing front end developer, and her talent??along with the rest of our amazing team??will help take our exec utions to the next level. I also loved working with PowerToFly at RebelMouse??all of the client campaigns that were built were from the core distributed team. And finally what do you like to do in your free time? (If you have any?)I have two rescue dogs that my wife and I enjoy spending a lot of our free time with. We take them everywhere mountains, beach, suburbs, city. They have the life. Im also very into live music. I started my career as a freelance writer for Stay Thirsty, Relix and Jambase.com, and continue to see about one live show a week. Then theres Soulcycle, which recharges the brain. All of these things are important to remain clear and focused. Balance is important.

The X-Files Dana Scully helped more women go into STEM

The X-Files Dana Scully helped more women go into STEMThe X-Files Dana Scully helped more women go into STEMIf you are a woman whose formative years took place between 1993 and 2002 and you now work in the STEM, there is a good chance you probably were a fan of The X-Files. The concept of Gillian Andersons Dana Scully as a no-nonsense, strong and kickass medical doctor, forensic pathologist and FBI agent inspiring a generation of young women to pursue careers in science has always been rumored, but there was never any concrete data to back it up.until now. Thanks to new research from theGeena Davis Institute on Gender in Media of 2,021 online participants (ages 25 and older), The Scully Effect has now been proven to be real. According to the survey, women who watchedThe X-Filesregularly were 50% more likely to work in STEM, over 60% of those work in STEM said Scully served as a role model, and amongst women who are familiar with Scullys character, 63% say Scully increased their confid ence that they could excel in a male-dominated profession. The authors of the study wrote, It is easy to dismiss entertainment media as simply entertaining, but half a century of social science research reveals that the characters, images, and storylines in media shape ur everyday lives in profound ways.12 They provide subtle and not-so-subtle cues about what we should prioritize in our lives, how we should spend our time, how we should spend our income, who we should love, how we should love, how to overcome hardships, etc. In the case of the Scully Effect, entertainment media influences what career options girls and women can envision for themselves. In Gillian Andersons own words, Scullys character manifested a woman not yet depicted on TV, and as the fan response soon proved, a desperately needed role model for women of all ages, everywhere.Abby Norman summed up the appeal of the character last year for Paste Magazine. For me- and Im sure many other young women who grew up watch ing it- Dana Scully was one of the first times I truly identified with a fictional character. I needed someone to give me permission to question what Id been told was the truth. I was desperately seeking strong female role models who had depth and definition beyond the normal tropes- none of which interested me, even as a preteen. As a venerable dweeb, I also was greatly in need of someone to tell me that being smart was an asset rather than an affliction, she wrote. This study is encouraging as more men continue to major in STEM fields in college. In 2013, even though women earn the majority of all bachelors degrees, they earned only 18 percent of all degrees in computer sciences, 19 percent in engineering, and 43 percent in mathematics. This gap then feeds into the workforce pipeline with women hold only 24% of jobs in STEM and only 10% of graduate degrees earned by women are in STEM fields, compared to 24% of graduate degrees earned by men.

Get the Inside Scoop on How Job Interviews Work

Get the Inside Scoop on How Job Interviews WorkGet the Inside Scoop on How Job Interviews WorkMaybe its been a while since your lastjob einstellungsgesprch? or maybe youre about to embark on your veryfirst real interview after graduation. Whatever the case, its normal to have a moment of panic after making arrangements to meet the hiring manager. Do you even know what this meeting iswhen it comes right down to it? Whats the typical format of a job interview? At its simplest, a job interview is a aussicht to learn more about the job while showcasing yourskills and experience. Your goal is to find out if the job is right for you, which means learning as much as possible about the duties, expectations, opportunities, team, and culture. You also want to show the hiring manager that youre the perfect person to solve the employers problems and skyrocket the company to even greater heights of success. All Job Interviews Are Not Created Equal If youve watched any workplace sitcoms, you p robably have one very specific image of what a job interview looks like. You expect a long table in a conference room, with you on one side of it, dressed in yourbest business apparel, and the boss on the other side of it, dressed in his or her much fancier workwear. But job interviews dont all look alike. For instance, your interview might Take place in the managers office, a conference room, an open space at the company, a restaurant, or acoffee shop.Involve just one person a representative from Human Resources (HR), for example, or your potential new boss or a panel of people. You might meet with prospective colleagues, people from other departments, the owner of the company, the Vice President of sales, just about anyone who works at the company.Last 15 minutes (generally not a terrific sign, but potentially OK, if its anearly screening) or several hours. You could even spend a whole day participating in several rounds of interviews. Be an exclusive affair, where youre the onl y candidate interviewing, or agroup interviewinvolving several other candidates. Find Out How it Will Work Before You Go The many possible variations are one reason why you want to communicate clearly with the hiring manager, recruiter, or HR representative before you arrive for your meeting. Dont be afraid to ask questions to get a sense of what youre going into. For example, you might ask Whom will I be meeting, and what is this persons role?Whatmaterials should I bring with me? (Regardless of what the hiring manager says, bring several copies of your resume and any other materials you might need to show your work, such as a portfolio.)What is thedress code? (If theres no dress code, tidybusiness casualis the best choice. Your interviewer might be wearing jeans, but you shouldnt be.) What the Interview Format Might Look Like Assuming that you have answers to all your questions (and that youre the only candidate interviewing that day, and will be meeting with just one perso n) the job interview formatwill probably look something like this Youll arrive at the office, at least 15 minutes early, having confirmed the address, including the floor and suite, ahead of time and mapped out your route to avoid traffic surprises.A receptionist or administrator will announce you.Youll be ushered into an office or conference room, whereupon youll meet the hiring manager or HR representative, and begin your conversation.Let the hiring manager set the tone but be on the lookout for an opportunity to ask your questions and make a case for yourself. The hiring manager might help with this, for instance by leading with an invitation to tell him or her about yourself. Come prepared with anelevator pitch, in which you explain who you are and what you do. Agood pitchlasts 60 seconds or less, andsells you as a candidate to the HR person. At the end of the interview, youll have the opportunity toask the interviewer questionsof your own. Be ready with a few questions about th e job and the company, and anything else you need to know to make a decision if you were to be offered the job. After the interview, follow-up with athank-note email or noteto everyone you interviewed with. Be Prepared to Be Flexible Understand that no matter howthoroughly you prepare, and how much information you get from the HR person on the phone, youre probably going to have to roll with some punches the day of the interview. Maybe the representative said that youd be meeting with one person, and youre actually landseeing three people. Maybe youll have to move to a different floor or another location or change your approach when it becomes clear that the hiring manager isnt buying what youre selling. Just remember that a job interview is, at its heart, a meeting between two or more people who might work together someday. You all have the same goal in mind to see if you can have a happy and productive working relationship.
